Emilia Fox is one of the latest in the hugely successful theatrical dynasty started by amongst others her great-grandfather, the dramatist Frederick Lonsdale. Her grandfather Robin Fox was one of London’s foremost theatrical agents, her grandmother was the actress Angela Worthington. Of their three children James and Edward (her father) are amongst the leading actors of their generation and Robert is one of the leading British producers. Following an education at the progressive, but nonetheless private, Bryanston School Fox went on to Oxford University. On leaving university she acted, with her mother, in the hugely successful television adaptation of Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (1995) and then went on to play the second Mrs de Winter in the 1997 version of Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca, following her mother who had played the role in the 1979 version with Jeremy Brett. She then however went on to forge her own career independent of her illustrious family with roles in such films as Stephen Poliakoff’s Shooting the Past (1999) and Richard E Grant’s The Scarlet Pimpernel (1999). The television re-make of Randall and Hopkirk Deceased with Vic Reeves (to whom she was briefly engaged) was to widen her fame and her role in Roman Polanski’s film The Pianist (2002) was to cement it. She is married to fellow offspring-of-a-legend Jared Harris (son of Richard).
