Emily Woof was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England in 1967. She studied at Oxford University and went from there to several years of work in the British theatre challenging most of the established preconceptions of that institution with her work both as an actress and a writer beginning with her trilogy of one-woman shows entitled sex, sex 2 and sex 3. It is this tendency of hers to question the accepted norms that feeds so wonderfully into her reading of Jane Eyre, another woman loath to toe the line, that and her being five foot two, a stature much in keeping with both Jane and Charlotte Brontë herself. Her leap into popular stardom came with her role in the 1997 film The Full Monty, this was followed by roles in The Woodlanders (1997), Velvet Goldmine (1998), Wondrous Oblivion (2003) and The League of Gentlemen’s Apocalypse (2005) amongst others. She has appeared in numerous television roles, amongst which was her critically acclaimed portrayal of Susie in Lynda La Plante’s Killer Net (1998). She has recently written and directed the film Meeting Helen which is due for release in 2007.
