Timothy West was born in Bradford, Yorkshire in 1934 and was the son of the actor Lockwood West. Educated at the famous English Public School of Harrow, he grew up to challenge the establishment into which he was born by becoming a lifelong campaigner for the Labour Party. His acting career has spanned fifty years and in that time he has dominated the British stage with several critically acclaimed portrayals of King Lear amongst his wide cannon of roles. He has directed theatre companies from England to Australia and is president of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. His film career has included, The Thirty-Nine Steps (1978) Cry Freedom (1987) and Iris (2001) and amongst his many television roles have been his famed portrayal of Edward VII in the 1975 series Edward the King, Bradley Hardacre in the 1982 series of Brass and Sir Leicester Deadlock in the 2005 television version of Dickens’ Bleak House. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1984.He is married to the actress Prunella Scales and is father to two sons Joseph and Samuel, the latter having followed his parents very successfully into the theatre and a daughter Juliet.
