This summer, BBC Four will be screening a season of programmes – a mix of dramas, documentaries and archive footage – providing a fascinating look at the biological discoveries that have shaped the modern world.

Spanish Flu – The Forgotten Fallen, one of the dramas in the series, tells the little known story of Dr James Niven, played by Silksoundbooks star audiobook reader Bill Paterson .

Inspired by Dr Niven's own accounts of his 30 years as Manchester's Medical Officer of Health, the film follows his heroic efforts to combat a second wave of fatal influenza as it spreads across the city of Manchester and the UK.
