Geraldine James who celebrates her big day today.
Geraldine was born in the English town of Maidenhead in Berkshire and went on to train at The Drama Centre,
London. Theatre director Peter Hall has said that she ranks among the great English classical actresses. One of her most successful roles was as
Portia opposite Dustin Hoffman in the 1998 West End production of
The Merchant of Venice which won her a Tony Award in 1990 when the play transferred to Broadway. She was made an officer of the Order of the British Empire -OBE - in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List of 2003.
