Tom Baker is best known for his portrayal of the fourth Doctor Who on BBC Television.
Born
and brought up in Liverpool during the Second World War, Tom spent 5 of
his teenage years as a monk before serving his National Service in the
Army Medical Corps, where he discovered his talent for acting. He
started his career on stage in repertory, eventually joining the
National Theatre in London where he worked with Laurence Olivier who
later proposed him to Sam Spiegel for the role of Rasputin in Nicholas and Alexandra.
A range of work in television and film, including The Millionairess on the BBC and The Golden Voyage of Sinbad in the cinema, led to him being noticed by the producers of Doctor Who.
After playing the Doctor in 178 episodes over 7 seasons, Tom went back on stage starring in, amongst others, Educating Rita, Hedda Gabler and She Stoops to Conquer. He then returned to television in roles including Puddleglum in The Silver Chair (Chronicles of Narnia), Captain Rum in Blackadder, and surgeon, Prof Geoffrey Hoyt, in Medics.
Tom
later began working with comedians, Vic Reeves, Bob Mortimer, Matt
Lucas and David Walliams. Vic and Bob cast him as Professor Wyvern in Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) and Matt and David brought him in on Little Britain as narrator.
Tom
still records Doctor Who audio books for the BBC and voiceovers for
television commercials. Tom’s recent appearances on television include Monarch of the Glen, Miss Marple and Have I Got News For You.
